The Fraunhofer Institute and the Association of German Transport Companies will be focusing on electromobility at the Transport Logistic.

The application of electrically driven commercial vehicles offers room for new ideas and visions. The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistic IML will therefore address the subject "Electromobility in logistics: current state, potentials, obstacles and trends" on 10th May. On the same day, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) will discuss the issue "Digitization – automation – electromobility. How can this sector be made even more eco-friendly and productive?"

The Fraunhofer Institute has been focusing on electromobility since 2011. The project "Elmo – Electric Vehicles for Urban Commercial Trade" ran until 2015. Project director Dr. Sebastian Stütz summarizes the result: "Supply commerce is considerably cheaper in their running costs – electric drive power versus fuel."

He speaks of 60 to 65 percent savings, due to the fact that electric drives are more efficient than combustion engines, and because electricity costs less taxes than diesel fuel. In addition, pending progress in battery technology is solving the problem of low ranges, which is still an issue, according to Fraunhofer IML. A 7.5-ton truck with an electric drive doesn't yet manage 150 kilometers in one go; furthermore, range varies depending on the ambient temperature.
